An Evening With Scott Capurro

Award winning comedian, actor and writer Scott Capurro (USA), known for his work on several US and UK TV programmes, including The Wright Stuff, 8 Out of 10 Cats and The Truth About Gay Animals, is touring San Francisco, with mace and a tube of chapstick!

He’s described by San Francisco Weekly (free press, edited by lesbians and designed by trannys with large hands and hidden agendas) as “stand-up in the very best possible sense – deadpan, ever-alert and hilarious”.

Scott also appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire, where, effortlessly, he played a homosexual; and Star Wars: Phantom Menace, where, breathlessly, he wore a body stocking.

Scott is an action figure (two headed, which is better than one, obviously) and he was banned from Australian TV for eroticizing the Christ figure. Consequently, Scott knows several religious leaders (wink, wink) and Bono. Well, he met Bono once. They’re both vegetarians. Actually, Scott is. Bono said he was, to impress Scott. Trump eats anything.

“‘If you thought comics like Ricky Gervais pushed boundaries then nothing will prepare you for Scott Capurro. Having won the coveted Perrier award in 1994, the San Franciscan comic has gone from strength to strength while refusing to sell out, making each show more uncompromising than the last. He is, in my opinion, the bravest and funniest comedian on the circuit.’ GQ Magazine

Yet accept the ferocious, corrosive material in the provocative spirit it’s intended, and it is brilliantly, shockingly funny. So far beyond the pale that the only reaction IS to laugh, partly out of discomfort, partly out of the sheer audacity of it all.” Chortle *****

Haight Ashbury’s Second Act Marketplace Welcomes its Newest Partner, Russian-Inspired Bakery, Bulka

Second Act Marketplace and Events, a food hall and event space is pleased to welcome its newest marketplace partner, Bulka Bakery, serving sweet and savory baked goods and other delicacies.  As Haight Street continues to grow and bring in new merchants, Second Act is also seeing the neighborhood change. This much-needed bakery is a great addition to the Haight Ashbury area. More so, Second Act is proud to offer local, house-made and affordable food and drink options, many under $10.

Located at the site of the beloved Red Vic Movie House, the market place was converted two years ago into it’s ‘second act’ by its original owners, Betsy and Jack Rix. Second Act functions as a community space that includes retail storefronts for five Bay Area food & beverage businesses; Raw organic juices, AйDa Piroshki, Crêpe La Vie, Burma Bear and now also Bulka Bakery.

“We are in year two of this food entrepreneurial experiment. When we had the idea for the Second Act Marketplace several years ago, we had a vision of a thriving community of small businesses,” said owners Jack and Betsy Rix. “We needed a dream team of entrepreneurs who would be strong individually, create a balance of delicious foods, and enhance the rapidly changing Upper Haight food scene. We can proudly say it’s working!”

Bulka Bakery’s owner and baker, Tatiana Kasatkina saw great success at her pop-up at Farm Table and wanted to fulfill her dream of opening a bakery and coffee shop. She launched Bulka, which means “bun” or “loaf” in her native Russian, with the goal of bringing her modern interpretations of beloved Russian baked goods and foods, along with bakery specialties to a wider audience.

“To be at Second Act is a great start for me,” said Kasatkina. “It allowed me to open a bakery with affordable start-up costs, , and, thanks to the constant stream of customers I can test out different items on the menu to see what people like the most. Currently trending are the Poppyseed Blueberry-Blackberry Walnut Rolls; Caramelized Pear Almond Cakes and Sochnik (a Russian pastry with farmer’s cheese and currants). On the savory side, the Mushroom Potato and Spinach Quiche and the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Tartine are becoming customer favorites.”

Officially opened in late January, Bulka Bakery will serve coffee, savory and sweet pastries, signature housemade bread, granola with yogurt, buckwheat cereal, sweet farmer’s cheese with berries and nuts, croissants, quiche and hot pressed sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Tatiana hopes to start baking Russian cakes like honey cake, Napoleon and white mountain cake in the coming months.

“It’s been about two months. Already, we can see that the fanfare for Bulka Bakery has begun. We are thrilled to have this delectable food option that will please anyone who visits Second Act,” added Jack and Betsy and Rix.

Second Act Marketplace and Events Works with Up-and-Coming Bakery

Second Act Marketplace and Events, a market hall and event space located at the site of the beloved Red Vic Movie House, was converted into its new incarnation by its original owners, Betsy and Jack Rix. Second Act functions as a community space that includes retail storefronts for five local food & beverage businesses, and is delighted to announce  BULKA Bakery as its newest marketplace partner. This new partner joins Raw organic juices, AйDa Piroshki, Crêpe La Vie and Burma Bear, to provide the Haight neighborhood with gourmet food options under $10. In addition, Crêpe La Vie and Burma Bear recently celebrated their one year anniversary at Second Act.

“Now that we are approaching our year two of this food entrepreneurial experiment, we can proudly say it’s working,” said owners Jack and Betsy Rix. “We truly feel that a new community in the Haight is being built. In fact, we were introduced to the owner of BULKA Bakery from one of our original Marketplace partners, Anna from Anda Piroshki.”

Tatiana Kasatkina realized very quickly that baking was her big passion. She saw great success at her pop-up at Farm Table and wanted to fulfill her dream of opening a bakery and coffee shop.

“To be at Second Act is a great start for me,” said Kasatkina. “It does not require $100K+ investment to open a bake shop, and I can put different items on the menu to see what people like the most. It is going to be hard work and I cannot be more excited to get started!”

Opening in December, BULKA Bakery will serve along with coffee, savory and sweet pastries, signature housemade bread, granola with yogurt, buckwheat cereal, sweet farmer’s cheese with berries and nuts, croissants, quiche and hot pressed sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

“We are thrilled to add another delectable food option that will please anyone who visits Second Act,” added Jack and Betsy and Rix

Second Act Marketplace and Events Expands with Lunch Options

Second Act Marketplace and Events Expands with Lunch Options

The Food Hall’s Newest Marketplace Partners Are Purveyors of
Handmade Crepes and Burmese-Californian Barbecue

(October 2014 – San Francisco, CA) Second Act Marketplace and Events, a market hall and event space located at the site of the beloved Red Vic Movie House, was recently converted into its new incarnation by its original owners, Betsy and Jack Rix. Second Act functions as a community space that includes retail storefronts for five local food & beverage businesses, and is delighted to announce Burma Bear and Crêpe La Vie as its newest marketplace partners. These two new partners join Raw organic juices, AйDa Piroshki, and Eatwell Farm’s Icebox soft serve, to provide the Haight neighborhood with gourmet food options under $10. Crêpe La Vie is currently open for business, and Burma Bear is slated to move in and begin service in November.

“One of our goals is to create an urban food market for up and coming businesses. Burma Bear and Crêpe La Vie fit perfectly into our mission,” said owners Jack and Betsy Rix. “We are thrilled to welcome both vendors to Second Act. There is a variety of food now, and lunch options that will please anybody who wants an inexpensive and delicious meal.”

Started in 2013 as a passion project, Burma Bear serves California/Burmese-style barbecue. Owner Hubert Lim, who was born in Burma and raised in San Francisco, pairs his expertly grilled meats with flavors of Burma: incorporating cinnamon seasoning in BBQ ribs and complementing it with the warm spices of biryani rice; his fresh noodle salad brings out the tartness of garlic-lime prawns; and serves diners the flavors of his heritage with garlicky grilled chicken over a bed of yellow pea fried rice.  Burma Bear’s move to Second Act is a big step. “This is my first brick-and-mortar store,” said Lim. “We’ve been doing pop-ups and festivals such as the 20th Street Block Party and Eat Real Festival for about a year now.” Supporting Bay Area farms is an essential part of his business, and Lim sources all of his ingredients locally.

Emilie Le Pessot quit her marketing job and began Crêpe La Vie in 2013, finding joy in cooking for others. Born into a family of chefs, Le Pessot learned how to cook, bake, and make crêpes at an early age. Now trained as a crêpe master in Paris, she creates savory and sweet French crêpes made from scratch right before your eyes. Crêpe La Vie’s savory crêpes are made with organic buckwheat flour, and sweet crêpes are made in the traditional Brittany style with eggs, milk, sugar and unbleached pastry flour. Both are served with a variety of toppings made with organic, homemade products.

Le Pessot had been looking for a permanent space for a few months, and she’d had her sights on the Haight for a number of reasons: “The Haight is full of people, and there are a lot of independent stores and especially great food options. I’d like to become one of the great food options.”

Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box joins Second Act Marketplace and Events

The new addition provides soft serve ice cream and Drinkwell Softers

Second Act Marketplace and Events, a neighborhood public space that includes five retail businesses bringing a fresh vision of food and beverages, and a venue that showcases events, is proud to announce that Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box is its newest marketplace partner.

“Second Act is thrilled to welcome Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box to Second Act. One of our goals is to create an urban market for products from local farms, and having a vendor who is part of one of the most visionary farms in Northern California fits perfectly into our mission,” said owners, Jack and Betsy Rix.

Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box was first conceived at Eatwell Farms, a certified organic farm in Dixon, Calif. As one of the first CSAs in the Bay Area, owners Nigel and Lorraine Walker began creating Softers, a naturally fermented soft drink made with fruit juice, herbal hydrosol, sugar and yogurt cultures. Always wanting to incorporate the produce from the farm, Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box was created in 2013. Eatwell Farm owner Nigel had the dream to create ice cream flavors from the farm before the business even began. However, the positive progress of the farm keeps him busy, giving him less time to focus on his ice cream dreams.

“Eatwell Farm provides produce to many vibrant neighborhoods in San Francisco, including the Haight. It’s only fitting to provide ice cream as well,” said partner, Nigel Walker. “Having a storefront in the Second Act allows us to connect with our members and ice cream lovers in a whole new way.” Starting out as a food truck, Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box began serving soft serve ice cream at popular locations like the Ferry Building farmer’s markets, Soma StrEAT Food Park and Off the Grid events.

Now embarking on its first brick and mortar location, Roma Gray, partner at Ice Box will be managing the Second Act location. She has been an Eatwell member since 2010 and is thrilled to take on this role in building and increasing the business.

“Eatwell Farm’s has a tradition of sharing the best quality organic produce with its members, and with Ice Box at Second Act, we intend to do the same for our guests,” explained partner Roma Gray. “With the new location, we can continue the conversation of what local and organic means to Ice Box. And with a storefront that’s open every day, we have the opportunity to offer different flavors every day! The possibilities are endless,” added Gray.

Eatwell Farm’s Ice Box has a following for its chocolate vanilla twist. Creamy chocolate with specialty stone ground chocolate made of cacao nibs pairs perfectly with vanilla. Another popular item is the Lemon Verbena Softer with a serving of Summer Strawberry soft serve ice cream.
